"Baby it's cold outside." - lyric by Frank Loesser
I'm sorry to have skipped a post about my November favorites because I had some good ones. Here is a list of everything I was loving in November:
1. Snack: Chicken Salad on a Toasted Whole Wheat Bagel
2. Scent: Laugh With Me Lee Lee by Benefit Cosmetics
3. Treat: Lush Bath Products
4. Tis the Season: To Eat Everything and Anything!
5. My Cup of Tea: Bleu Jardin by Damman Freres
6. Color: Rose Gold
7. Candle: Merry Mistletoe by Bath and Body Works
8. Song I'm Listening to on Repeat: Enchanted by Taylor Swift
December's Favorites
1. Snack: Cuties Mandarin Oranges and TimTam cookies by Pepperidge Farms
2. Scent: So This is Love Eau de Parfum for the Sephora Cinderella Collection
3. Treat: Being able to spend time with my best friend during the holidays (and also maybe Latkes)
4. Tis the Season: To give your family and friends some really great gifts.
5. My Cup of Tea: The green tea that you get at Japanese restaurants, I also really like Starbuck's Tazo Iced Green Tea with Spearmint.
6. Color: Cream and Gold
7. Candle: Spiced Apple Toddy by Bath and Body Works
8. Film: I've seen a lot of really great films this month, but I have to say Hitchcock really takes the cake.

Birchbox: December 2012
Hello Friends,
December has been a slow month for posts because I've been working more than usual and my access to Internet continues to grow more and more limited. This month, Birchbox's theme was "All Wrapped Up," and the lid of the box was dressed up (and so stinkin' cute).
Here's what came in my BB this month:
1. Juliette Has a Gun: Mad Madame Eau de Parfum
According to Birchbox, this perfume has notes of rose oxide and black currant. This sample is one of the better smelling perfume samples I've received from Birchbox (except for Viva La Juicy- which I rushed out and bought right away). It actually smells a bit like the Original Marc Jacobs women perfume (my signature scent). It's nice but definitely not worth the $110-135 cost of a full-size.
2. Miss Jessie's Original: Pillow Soft Curls Styling Lotion
I was excited to receive these samples because I have naturally curly hair and I'm always interested in trying styling products that can help me tame my mane. I have not yet tried these but I was really happy that Birchbox gave me two generously-sized packets of the product so I can really get a sense of what it does for my hair. I think that this product could have easily been sent in a bottle though and I feel like that would have been way more convenient. I hope it smells nice!
3. ModelCo: Shine Ultra Lip Gloss
It was really nice to get a full sized makeup product this month, I just wish it hadn't been lip gloss. I never use lip gloss because I don't like the stickiness and sadly this gloss is ultra sticky and tacky. It has a nice pink berry color with very subtle glitter and would be great for the holidays. It also smells like strawberry pop rocks! I like that the packaging on ModelCo's products have mirrors because it makes it super convenient to throw in your purse. For someone who wears lip gloss, this would be a really nice surprise in this month's BB.
4. NUXE: Reve de Miel Facial Cleansing and Make-up Removing Gel
I like that this product is a facial cleanser with make-up removing properties (remains to be seen) but it smells pretty bad. Fragrance and texture are always super important to me in any product and having either of these two elements off can really break a product for me. Like hair products, I always hope that my facial cleansers will either smell amazing or smell like nothing at all. I will use this sample for traveling in a
couple of weeks though, so I guess that's convenient.
5. Chuao Chocolatier: ChocoPod in Salted Chocolate Crunch
This month's lifestyle extra was CHOCOLATE! I've been excited to try the Chuao samples that Birchbox has been sending out because I love this brand. The flavors of their chocolates are always really delicious and unexpected. The sample was incredibly small but is probably a full-sized chocopod- they are literally bite-sized (one bite). Mine had breadcrumbs and sea salt chunks in it, which kind of made me scared about cracking my teeth but I would definitely purchase these pods in the real world!
Other items in the box:
- a cute To/From gift tag- which I'll probably use to regift the lipgloss!
- a $50 discount off of a $125 rental at RenttheRunway. Kind of a fun extra for the holiday season.
Ratings for December's Birchbox
1. Juliet Has a Gun Perfume: * * * three leaves
2. Miss Jessie's Curl Lotion: * * * three leaves
3. ModelCo Lip Gloss: * * * three leaves
4. NUXE Facial Cleanser/Makeup Remover: * * two leaves
5. Chuao Chocolate: * * * * * five stars (I feel like it's always the extra that I like the best...)
Overall Rating for December's Box: * * * 3 Leaves ( PLUS: a bonus leaf * for the awesome packaging on this month's box. and the other little fun things like the discount for RenttheRunway and the gift tag).
This month's box was good, I was excited about the full-size makeup product, even though I can't use it and I think most of the samples were more or less generously sized. I liked the variety of the box- it covered makeup, hair, skin care, and fragrance so I'm happy. So far I'm still really excited about my Birchbox every month and feel like the products match my needs. There have been a couple months where I've purchased or wanted to purchase the products I've sampled from my BB so I think they're doing a great job!
I'm going to try to catch up with my posts in the next few days so stay tuned!

Holiday 2012 Gift Guide: The Best Friend
"Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, Silver white winters that melt into springs; These are a few of my favorite things." - Maria in The Sound of Music
This month, I will be doing a weekly gift guide for the important people in your life. I will be including a mix of items that can be purchased for 30 dollars or less and DIY projects.
Gifts for: The Best Friend
1) A Little Something Chocolate-y
Who doesn't love a nice box of chocolates that they don't have to share with anyone? Any sweet treat is always a welcome present during the holidays and many chocolate shoppes provide festively wrapped packages during the month of December. This box above is from Godiva and was $15 for a box of 6 truffles.
2) A Little Something For the Bath
Giving your best pal her favorite Lush bath bomb and soap is a great way to let her unwind and pamper herself during the holidays. It's easy to find any of the perennial favorites in gift sets under $20, otherwise if you know her favorite scents you can get a beautiful patterned fabric wrap to give the gift a little something extra. The Mr. Bumble set above includes a "Honey I Washed the Kids" soap and a bath bomb for approx. $15.
3) A Little Something Glamorous
Forever 21 has some amazing jewelry these days and is so freakingaffordable adorable! Lately I've been loving the vintage/Deco-inspired pieces. For friends who lust after J Crew statement necklaces and Kate Spade bangles, it's easy to find similar pieces at F21. The best part is that most of their jewelry is under $15. Grab a couple baubles and jewels to keep your friend sparkling all season long!
4) A Little Something Bright
Scent is one of the senses that is most strongly tied to memory and that's probably why burning a Winter/Fall candle completely sets the mood for the season. As you all know, Bath and Body Works has my favorite collection of seasonal candles and with scents ranging from Gourmand to Cinnamon Spice, it would be difficult to find a candle your friend doesn't like. Not sure what her taste is? Get a gift card! Mini BBW candles are generally 2 for $5 or $10 for a small one-wick candle. 3-wick candles are best when they're on the 2 for $20 sale!
5) A Little Something Surprising!
Subscription services like Birchbox and Julep Maven (pictured above) can be gifted to friends and can be given once or for a couple of months after the holidays end. There is a subscription to suit almost anyone's taste and who knows, your friend might just find her next holy grail product thanks to you!
6) DIY: A Little Something To Hang on a Tree
Last year, my friends and I had a holiday party where we made felt ornaments together. Fear-not if you are not particularly experienced with sewing, these projects require only simple stitches or can even be hot-glued together. Embellish with beads, ribbon, and fabric paint to make a truly unique present that can be loved for years to come.
7) DIY: A Little Something Memorable
A photo collage of your favorite snapshots of the two of you is a present that is really unique. You can choose pictures from years past or go on a fun photo shoot at one of your favorite spots and arrange these pictures in a collection of differently-sized frames that can be hung on a wall. You can find inexpensive and fun frames at stores like Target or TJ Maxx or you can even paint your own wooden frames from the craft store. Draw a little diagram for your bud so she'll know how the pictures fit together. I personally like the look of black and white pictures in simple black frames or choosing frames from different stores in the same color family.
Remember to always remind your bestie how much they mean to you, who else is going to be willing to spend four hours on the phone with you going over every last detail of you first encounter with your future soul mate?

Birchbox: November 2012
"Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don't unravel." - Unknown
I received my November Birchbox yesterday. This month's box shipped about a week late because of Hurricane Sandy but the box made pretty good time considering how strongly the Birchbox offices were hit by the storm. This month I received some really great sized samples and a really good balance of lifestyle/makeup products. Here's what was in my box:
The theme of this month's box is: Give.
1) Caldrea: Hand Soap
I received two small paper packets of hand soap in "Crimson Pear Ginger" and "Mandarin Vetiver". I haven't opened the packets to smell them yet but the scents sound very intriguing. I'm always interested in finding a good hand soap so I really liked having these samples included in the box. They're also a great size to keep in your purse or travel case for those little emergencies on the go.
Three Leaves * * *
2) Feeling Smitten: Holiday Bath Bomb
This was my favorite sample in the box. When I found out that BB was including cupcake bath bombs in some boxes this month I hoped very much that one would find its way into mine. It was pretty crumbly when I opened the box and some of the product had spilled out of the plastic bag into the box. Birchbox says that the bomb contains almond and coconut oils to moisturize your skin. I'm excited to take a fun birthday bath with this cupcake! Can't wait to see how it smells.
Five leaves! * * * * *
3) ModelCo: Fibre LashXtend Lengthening Mascara
This false lash mascara has tiny fibers that attach to your lashes as you sweep the mascara wand over your lashes. The sample is full size and has a little mirror on the back so you can apply with ease. I have been weary about using fiber lash extension mascara because I'm scared about getting the fibers in my eyes. This is one of those samples that is super nice to have because I would never buy this product (or fake lashes in general) for myself. I would only really use this product if I were going out and wanted to try something fun and new, but I don't expect to use it regularly. For best results, curl lashes before application. Here is a picture of my lashes after I used this product:
(sorry that the picture is sideways)
Four Leaves * * * *
4) Oscar Blandi: Pronto Texture Spray
I've been in the market for a texturizing spray for a couple of month so I was excited that this product was included in my box. The sample size is great for travel and on-the-go, but sadly I wasn't very enchanted with this product. I didn't really find a difference in the texture or volume of my hair after initial use and I can't get over how bad the smell of this product is. This spray just stinks. As I've said before, I think that hair products should always smell fantastic. In all, I'm really happy BB included this in my box so that I didn't take a chance and buy a full size product of something I don't like.
2 Leaves * *
5) Stella Cadenta: Miss Me Eau de Parfum
There are a lot of mixed feelings about including perfume samples in each month's Birchbox, with a lot of people arguing that these samples are essentially free and easily obtainable from the makeup counter and that they are included too often, but I actually enjoy getting a new scent each month. My first month I received Viva La Juicy La Fleur and I totally fell in love and had to purchase a full size. I haven't felt as strongly about any of the other samples I've received, but it's still nice to have them. I'm also the person who LOVES when magazines have perfume ads in them, even though they rarely smell like the perfume in the bottle.
With that said, I hated this sample. It is supposed to smell like "exotic blossoms and a subtle powdery finish," but it just smells like baby powder (and not in a fresh way, in a changing diaper way). The only thing I liked about this sample was the packaging.
One Leaf *
Lifestyle Extra: SoyJoy Cranberry Bar
No. Just no. Couldn't eat more than a couple bites.
One Leaf *
And one last addition to the box: Birchbox Gift Box
Birchbox included a small gift envelope for you to give someone you love a little Thanksgiving surprise. It's a very cute idea. Maybe I'll pass along the eau de baby powder...
Well that's it for November's Birchbox. All in all, I was very pleased with this box, even if I didn't love everything. I feel like a lot of Birchbox subscribers are becoming very disillusioned with BB, but I've been very happy with my subscription so far.

Favorites: Belated October
"I restore myself when I'm alone."--Marilyn Monroe
Here are some of my indulgences this month. Due to technical difficulties, this post is a little late. I hope you enjoyed your October as much as I did and that you had a fun and festive Halloween.
1. Snack: Mini Apples
Little apples are a perfect fall snack because they are crisp, refreshing, flavorful, and perfectly sized for throwing in your bag or adding some nutrition to your lunch. I've been loving these bite-sized apples all month. For a savory snack, spread some garlic cheese on top of mini apple slices. For a sweet treat, dip in caramel or peanut butter.
2. Scent: Lollia "Wish" Eau de Parfum
This perfume is a great transitional scent for late fall because it's a heavier scent that is still sugary and sweet. According to Lollia's website this fragrance's notes include: warm vanilla bean, sugar pastille, rice flower, jasmine leaves sweetened with sugar cane, ylang ylang, and amber woods. Also, can we just talk about how beautiful the gold leaf bees and sky blue detailing on the bottle are?
3. Treat: Godiva Chocolate Truffles
The month of October for me is all about discovering new sweets and treats. For me, Godiva is the perfect indulgence because these truffles are extremely decadent, flavorful and rich. This month I was lusting after the Pumpkin Cheesecake truffle but a perennial favorite is the Champagne truffle.
4. Tis the Season: Bath and Body Works Slatkin and Co./White Barn Candles
To say that BBW candles are a personal obsession of mine would be the understatement of the century. These candles conjure up all the comfort and coziness of staying inside as the weather grows colder and the feeling of pulling out chunky sweaters, thicker scarves and heavier blankets, even if the weather isn't quite right yet. My favorites include: Marshmallow Fireside, Farmstand Apple, Autumn Day, Black Pepper Bergamot, and White Barn No. 2 Chestnut and Clove.
5. My Cup of Tea: Mariage Freres- Bolero
This month I have been sipping this beautiful French fruity black tea. The peach, apricot, and fig in this tea gives it a very strong and rich flavor that is very calming and soothing. I love sipping this tea with Trader Joe's all-butter shortbread cookies with chocolate filling. To enjoy this loose-leaf tea, I recently purchased this damask mug from TJ Maxx that comes with a large strainer and a matching ceramic coaster/lid (not pictured).
6. Adventure: Disneyland's Halloween Time
The Halloween decorations at Disneyland are probably my favorite of any season. I love the colors, the vintage motifs, and of course- the villains! The only thing I might suggest is getting there in September so that you can enjoy the fall decorations but beat the insane October crowds.
7. Colors: Fall Pumpkins
My favorite colors for the month are the many bright hues of fall pumpkins. Oranges, hunter green, creamy white, smoky grey, and golden rod. This picture was taken of a festive display in front of the Ritz Carlton hotel in Half Moon Bay.
8. Favorite Film: Gone With the Wind (1939)
In early October I had the amazing opportunity to watch Gone With the Wind for the first time...on the silver screen! Watching this classic the way it was meant to be seen in a theater was truly a unique experience. This movie is definitely one of my all-time favorites and I'm tempted to brave Margaret Mitchell's novel.
That's all of my favorites for the month of October. Hopefully November will not be as painfully delayed. Enjoy sweet November, lovelies.

Birchbox: October 2012
"Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art."
--Ralph Waldo Emerson (A personal hero of mine).
Hello Friends,
I've been subscribed to Birchbox for 3 months now and after receiving my October box today, I've decided that it's time for me to start reviewing the subscription. I first learned of Birchbox in May when they collaborated with Gossip Girl to create a GG-inspired box and you know that I wanted one, and I wanted it badly. To sign up, you put your name on a waiting list and it usually takes a couple of weeks to be eligible to join. I hesitated to join initially when I became eligible (and my offer subsequently expired) because of the cost. At the time, I didn't know that you could pay by the month- I thought you had to buy a year's subscription upfront. Now that I have been getting Birchbox for a couple of months and have sampled two other subscription services (Glossybox and Julep Maven), I can really say that I am very happy with my BB subscription. It's like a Christmas stocking every month of the year! Doesn't get better than that.Birchbox is also pretty consistent about the quality of products they sample, the breadth of products in each box, and the affordability of the full-size products and the service itself. It's also somewhat customizable to suit your particular beauty needs- the company works to match your samples to your responses on an initial beauty survey when you sign up.
Another thing I really love about Birchbox is the story behind the company. Two women, Katia B. and Hayley B. created the company to fill an unmet need for consumes in the beauty industry- a way to discover and sample new products and brands and to truly find what works (you can read more about this here. While I don't absolutely love every product in my box every month, I can almost always find something I really enjoy or want to purchase. Another thing that makes Birchbox a great system is that you can easily find anything that you loved in your box on the Birchbox website (and even earn points for buying full-sized products + free shipping- yay!).
One last thing I'll say is that the Birchbox company is truly a hallmark of the times- everything about it is online. I haven't really seen print/television advertising for BB, though I may have seen a quick online ad while watching a show online or an editorial in beauty mags. Everything about the company is online- their shop, their blog, and their fan base. What carries BB forward is its ability to utilize the online beauty/fashion community and communication forums like YouTube and blogs to really get people excited about their service. YouTube beauty gurus often show off their monthly boxes on their channels and most candidly review the products they received, describing smell, taste, texture, size, and familiarity with the products. This way, you can learn about many more products than the 4-5 that you were able to sample directly in your month's box and decide whether you might want to try it later. And if other viewers are like me, watching other people open their Birchbox is equally as exciting as opening your own. Unless of course they have something you wanted but didn't get. Then you're just green with envy. It's okay...there's always next month and the possibility that I might get a beauty blender some day...I'm not bitter... :-)
So as I said, I've been pleasantly surprised and happy with every Birchbox I've had so far. Here's an overview of my box this month (pictured above):
Psst: It's time for me to present LetThemDevourCake's official blog rating system: I'm rating everything (from Birchbox samples to new teas and tearooms with tea leaves) on scale of 1 to 5 leaves.
5 leaves: Can't live without it, Love it, All-time Favorite It's Extra Delicious, Want to slather myself in it, etc.
4 leaves: It's pretty great, not quite my favorite though.
3 leaves: I like it, I'm willing to give it some time/a couple extra tries
2 leaves: On the fence, smells/tastes weird, Enh...
1 leaf: Yikes. Can't redeem itself. Just, no.
and if it's really godawful...
No leaves: I wouldn't waste my time, throw it out immediately. Make it go away.
October's Theme: Transformation
1) Harvey Prince: Eau Flirt Perfume
I was supposed to receive the Harvey Prince Lavender/Pumpkin scent, which would have been perfect for this season and Halloween! That's not what this is- this is Citrus/Jasmine-scented.The vile is almost impossible to open without spilling and the scent is just not for me. It's "clinically proven to attract men" though. So I guess it's good that I'm not all over it...
I'll give it 2 out of 5 leaves.
2) Mox Botanicals: Pomegranate and Fig Lip Butter
This was one of the products that I was looking forward to more so than some others this month but I was a little disappointed because I was really excited for the Pomegranate/Fig scent/flavor but it didn't really smell/taste like either of these things to me. I love this combination for fall, but the taste is more herbal and kinda funky. It's pretty moisturizing but it didn't do amazing things for my lips. I was really happy to try this product and was happy it was included because I am in the market for a lip butter or moisturizer to work miracles for my chronically cracked lips.
A solid 3 leaves.
3) Ouidad: Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel
So this is one of those areas where one starts to see the limitations of the beauty profile survey and the customizability of BB. I don't live in a place with heat OR humidity. I live in a place with constant fog- so I guess frizz can be a problem here but it isn't really for me. That's also why this sample might be good to have around- it's not something I'd buy on my own, but if I decide to vacation in Florida, I'll be sure to bring it along. I didn't want to open it just to smell it but I wonder how it smells. Hair products always need to smell awesome. That's just my opinion. Coming out of a salon is like a sensory explosion for me- why do their shampoos always smell so much better than mine?
3 leaves.
4) theBalm cosmetics: Mary-Lou Manizer Highlighter/Shadow/Shimmer
This was the beauty product that I was the most excited to receive this month. I love highlighters, possibly more than any other beauty item because they are so versatile and there are so many different kinds! I currently use Benefit's Watts Up Cream Highlighter, but this little sample will perfectly complement the Watts Up because of its champagne hue. I also love that I can use it as a shadow and it's a pretty generous amount of product for a BB sample. This will be great for travel, it's the perfect size to just throw in a bag and go! Also love that Birchbox included a handy how-to guide for highlighters- it's a tricky product to use correctly but is really worth the effort.
4.5 leaves--yeah Birchbox!
And Last but not least,
Birchbox will usually include a 5th "Lifestyle extra" in the box. This item can be food, drink, coupon (tunes, retail discounts), headphones, etc. This really helps mix things up and is just a really fun added bonus.
My Lifestyle extra for October: Mighty Leaf Tea (3): in Green Tea Tropical, Organic African Nectar, and Organic Earl Grey
First of all, in case you weren't aware- this is a tea blog (among other things) and I am a tea enthusiast (though that word doesn't at all seem sufficient). I was so excited to receive three Mighty Leaf tea bags. As far as tea bags (non loose-leaf) goes, Mighty Leaf is one of my favorite brands. Their teas are super flavorful and are perfect hot or chilled. It's not as easy to find at the grocery store as some other brands like Tazo and Stash and I think it might be expensive but it's well worth it!
5 Leaves.
Okay well that's my box this month. Future overviews will be SO much shorter, I promise. I just wanted to introduce you to Birchbox, if you two haven't met already. Have I sold you yet? You know you want it.
To learn more about Birchbox and to see unboxings from months past, I strongly recommend watching beauty vloggers EleventhGorgeous' videos. These two spunky sisters are hilarious and so full of beauty tidbits. I'm mildly obsessed with their YouTube channel. Careful, once you start, you wont be able to stop...

Until next time my lovelies,
d.
P.S.: Me with my first Birchbox in August. So much happiness.
